03 - Place banana slices in the freezer for at least 1 hour until firm.
04 - Melt dark chocolate and coconut oil (if using) together in a microwave-safe bowl in 20–30 second increments, stirring between each, or melt over a double boiler until smooth.
05 - Using a fork or toothpick, dip each frozen banana slice into the melted chocolate, coating thoroughly.
06 - Place chocolate-coated banana bites back on the baking sheet and immediately sprinkle with chosen toppings before the chocolate sets.
07 - Return the tray to the freezer for at least 1 more hour until the chocolate hardens.
08 - Serve frozen; store leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 weeks.

# Expert Insights:

01 -
  • They take almost no skill to make, but everyone assumes you bought them somewhere expensive.
  • You can customize the toppings based on what's already sitting in your pantry.
  • They stay good in the freezer for weeks, so you always have a treat ready when the craving hits.
02 -
  • If you skip freezing the banana slices before dipping, they'll fall apart in the warm chocolate and turn into a mushy mess.
  • Don't let the chocolate get too hot or it will seize up and become grainy instead of smooth.
  • These soften fast at room temperature, so serve them straight from the freezer and keep extras stored in an airtight container.
03 -
  • Use a toothpick to dip each slice if you want less chocolate on your fingers and a cleaner finish on the bites.
  • If the chocolate starts to thicken while you're working, pop it back in the microwave for 10 seconds to loosen it up again.
  • Freeze a few plain without toppings so picky eaters or anyone with allergies still has something they can enjoy.
